There’s the emergence of light from shadow, the sense of familiar and foreboding all at once, and a sense awe and wonder as you see parts of the woods for the first time. Walking through the woods can make you feel like there really is magic in the world; reading The Woods can give you that same feeling.

Pumpkin beers. They’re all the rage right now. Finding one that is a solid beer with authentic pumpkin flavors with a good balance of spices can be tricky. Sometimes it’s all cinnamon and nutmeg; sometimes it’s nothing but pumpkin in your face; and sometimes it’s too much of the base beer and not enough of everything else. But when you find that pumpkin beer that has a solid quality beer base, blended with just the right amount of pumpkin flavors, and accented with notes of spices, that is damn near magical, my friends. The Woods #6 from James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas is to comics what Dogfishhead Pumpkin Ale is to pumpkin beer.

Mash-ups are kind of my jam. And The Woods is a wonderful mash-up of genres that works really well together. There’s a little Lord of the Flies with some Dungeons and Dragons with hints of The Breakfast Club with a hint of Star Gate. Plus, this issue acts as a decent jumping on point, with enough flashbacks to fill in some gaps for newbies, but also ads new info for folks who have been on board since issue #1.
